Edward William Binney
1812–81
Geologist and philanthropist. Qualified as a solicitor and took chambers in Manchester, 1835. Active in the Manchester Mechanics’ Institution and the Literary and Philosophical Society. A founder of the Manchester Geological Society, 1838; president, 1857–9, 1865–7. Worked with J. D. Hooker on coal plants. Worked to improve sanitary conditions in Manchester. Supported Sunday opening of museums and the practical pursuit of science by people of all classes. FRS 1856.
