John Richardson

1787–1865

Arctic explorer and naturalist. Assistant surgeon and surgeon on various ships, then surgeon and naturalist on John Franklin’s polar expeditions, 1819–22 and 1826–7. Surgeon to the Chatham division of marines, 1824–38. Appointed physician to the Royal Hospital, Haslar, 1838. Conducted a search expedition for John Franklin, 1847–9. Retired to Grasmere, where he accomplished much literary work. Knighted, 1846. FRS 1825.
