Édouard Joseph Louis Marie (Édouard) van Beneden

1846–1910

Belgian embryologist and cytologist. Professor extraordinarius of zoology and comparative anatomy, University of Liège, 1871; professor, 1874. Co-founder of the journal Archives de biologie, in which most of his work was published. Known for his work on mammalian embryo formation, and his discovery of meiosis.
