Thomas Morland Hocken

1836–1910

New Zealand surgeon and collector. Born in England. MRCS 1859. Ship’s surgeon on the Australian run. Settled in Dunedin, in Otago, New Zealand, 1862. A leading figure in many medical institutions in Dunedin. A founder and three-times president of the Otago Institute, a scientific society. Made a significant collection of New Zealand and Pacific artefacts and documents relating to the history of the region. Fellow of the Linnean Society of London, 1883.
