Scottish neurologist. Studied psychology at Heidelberg. MB, Edinburgh, 1868. Lecturer on physiology, Middlesex Hospital school, 1870. Demonstrator, King’s College, London, 1871; professor of forensic medicine, 1872; assistant physician, 1874; professor of neuropathology, 1889; physician, 1890. Retired in 1908. Carried out pioneering research into brain function and made significant contributions to the field of brain surgery. One of the founding editors of Brain, 1878. Knighted, 1911.
