John Gwenogfryn Evans

1852–1930

Unitarian minister and Welsh scholar. Studied at the Presbyterian College, Carmarthen, 1872–6. Unitarian minister in Carmarthen, 1877; Preston, Lancashire, 1877–80. Retired from active ministry after losing his voice, 1880. Lived in Oxford, 1880–1900; honorary MA, Oxford, 1887. Inspector of Welsh texts for the Historical Manuscripts Commission, 1894. Retired to Caernarvonshire. Authority on Welsh classical texts.
