Footnotes

Murray refers to the 1873 reprint of Journal of researches (1870).
CD was managing the financial side of the English translation of F. Müller 1864 (Dallas trans. 1869). He had earlier transmitted royalties to Fritz Müller after a thousand copies had sold (see Correspondence vol. 21, letter to Fritz Müller, 25 September 1873).
CD had probably sent Murray a request for presentation copies of Descent 2d ed.
The right-hand column of the table is a printed list of CD’s titles that John Murray attached to his letter, adding the numbers on the left by hand.
In September 1873, Murray had printed another 2000 copies of Expression (see Correspondence vol. 21, letter from John Murray, 25 September [1873]), but the anticipated sales did not occur (see letter from John Murray Jr, 15 September 1874).
