Darwin Correspondence Project

From R. F. Cooke   24 January 1873

50A, Albemarle Street, London, W.

Jany 24 1873

My dear Sir

It will be requisite to send the Popular edition of the “Origin of Species” to press, as we have exhausted the first edition of 3000 Copies.!!!1

There are of course plenty of copies in the hands of the booksellers, but we are out & owe the trade some, on account of our last Trade Sale.2

I write therefore to ask you if you have found any errors which had better be corrected in the stereotype plates?

We are getting together the various items of expense of your new work3 & you will hear shortly from Mr Murray

Yours faithfully | Robt. Cooke

Chas. Darwin Esq

CD annotations

End of letter: ‘With the Kind Regards of the Author | Alter thousands & Put in Expression book a list of my books’4 pencil

Footnotes

The first printing of the sixth edition of Origin, which was cheaper than the previous editions, was published in February 1872 (Freeman 1977).
John Murray’s sale dinner took place on 8 November 1872 (see Correspondence vol. 20, letter from John Murray, 9 November 1872).
Expression.
CD’s reply to Cooke has not been found; he evidently wanted to remind Cooke to alter the number of thousands printed to date on the title page of Origin 6th ed. and to include a list of his publications in Expression. The number of thousands was not changed (Freeman 1977). Expression already included a list of CD’s works on the verso of the title page.
