John Murray was the publisher of Expression. Ruck was engaged to Francis Darwin (see letter to G. H. Darwin, 3 May [1872] and n. 5); she had also helped CD with his work on earthworms (see letters from Amy Ruck to Horace Darwin, [20 January 1872] and [1 February 1872]). Ruck’s name appears on CD’s presentation list for Expression (Appendix V).
A section of the second page of the letter has been excised.
