Darwin Correspondence Project

From W. Baranoff and Heinrich Koch   [after 31 October? 1871]1

Mr. Ch. D., Down.

We received your last letter and are glad of the acknowledgement pronounced by you.2 Your opinion, that the bearing of science on religion is a most abstruse subject, is very true; but we cannot but give a hint in this respect, as we work in the field of Psychology. Therefore our third lecture shall contain a history of creation from the point of a Darwinian; God; future life; especially the question: Why are men on earth and what is their duty; an ethical view of the Darwinism.3 To the last question your remarks on the connexion between the two sexes are very important. We hope, that your health will soon be restored!

Yours Dr. W. B. and H. K.

Footnotes

The date is conjectured from the relationship between this letter, the letter from W. Baranoff and Heinrich Koch, 27 October 1871, and the letter from Heinrich Koch, 31 October 1871. It was printed in the correspondence section of Blätter des Psychologischen Vereins zu Dresden, 27 October 1871: this section contained replies to letters to the editors but not the letters themselves. This issue of the Blätter contained the first part of Baranoff and Koch 1871 (see letter from W. Baranoff and Heinrich Koch, 27 October 1871 and n. 1), and was probably printed after 31 October 1871 (see letter from Heinrich Koch, 31 October 1871). There is no record of any earlier correspondence between CD and Baranoff or Koch.
No letter from CD to Baranoff or Koch has been found.
The third part of Baranoff and Koch 1871 was published (or delivered) on 31 December 1871. See letter from W. Baranoff and Heinrich Koch, 27 October 1871 and n. 1.
