Darwin Correspondence Project

To John Phillips   [November–December 1871?]1

I have not yet received the book, but I cannot put off thanking you for your little note, the extreme kindness of which has pleased me greatly.—2 I feel sure that your book will interest me.

& with cordial thanks, I remain | Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

The correspondent is identified as Phillips since the letter forms part of a collection of letters from CD to Phillips held at the American Philosophical Society. The date is conjectured on the assumption that the book referred to is Phillips 1871 (see n. 2, below).
The note has not been found. The book may have been Geology of Oxford (Phillips 1871), which was published between 16 and 30 November 1871 (Publishers’ Circular 1871). CD’s copy is in the Darwin Library–Down.
