I suppose this Bill is Carolines2 so send it on as I dare say it is paid— The Clock is not come.

Sylvester came & said some officers having been speaking so highly of Leonard that I thought you would like to hear it— in their expressive language ‘he is all there’ & perhaps Lenny can translate the military language.3 This note is all topsy turvy as I dont know to whom I am writing

James Joseph Sylvester was professor of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where Leonard Darwin was a student from August 1868 until 1871. Sylvester’s successor at Woolwich was appointed in August 1870. (RMAS archives, Sandhurst Collection.)
