Dear Sir,
One of My students has translated most of your interesting work on the \emph{Fertilisation of Orchids} into French;2 Before pursuing his project any further, he asks you to do him the kindness of giving him some information which I shall venture to request from you.
Has your book on the fertilisation of the orchids been translated into French? Would you be disposed to authorise a translation, and could it be produced by taking the volume published in London by John Murray in 1862 as a guide?
As science has made some progress since then, perhaps you are currently preparing a new edition? If not, it would no doubt suit you to revise the edition that has appeared and to add notes; would it be agreeable to you if the translation were submitted to you in advance and in stages?
I take the liberty, dear Sir, to ask your advice on these questions that greatly preoccupy my young disciple, and I dare to hope that you will be so good as to let us know your feelings.
Perhaps you may find difficulties that we have not foreseen in carrying out the work? I beg you not to dissimulate them to us.
In any case, dear Sir, rest assured that nothing will be done without your express consent.
I deeply regretted not being able to converse with you when I came to London last August on the occasion of the Norwich Congress, to which I was invited.3
Knowing your state of health, I feared to importune you and disturb your much-needed rest.
Allow me to thank you for sending your second volume on the variation of animals and plants, I am reading it, or rather studying it attentively.4
I dare not abuse your precious moments any further and I beg you, Sir, to rest assured of my admiration and deep respect.
Ernest Faivre | Professor at the Faculty of Sciences at Lyon | Curator of the Botanical Garden etc.
