To J. V. Carus   4 November [1867]1

Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.

Nov 4.

My dear Sir

I enclose the Title, which as you will observe is corrected.2 I hardly see how you can write a prospectus until you see at least part of the 2nd volume.3

You will have received, since writing, 4 sheets; & 12 more pages completes vol. 1. Vol. 2 consists of 432 pages, & I suppose the clean sheets of the 1st half of this vol. will be soon printed.4

My dear Sir | yours sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. V. Carus, 30 October 1867.
The enclosure has not been found. See letter from J. V. Carus, 30 October 1867. For the approved version of the title of Variation, see the letter to John Murray, 19 October [1867].
Carus had offered to write a short prospectus for the German edition of Variation for its publisher, Christian Friedrich Schweizerbart (see letter from J. V. Carus, 30 October 1867).
Proof-sheets of Variation were being sent to Carus for him to translate (see also letter to J. V. Carus, 19 October [1867], and letter from John Murray, 23 September [1867]).
