To J. V. Carus 19 October [1867]1
Down. | Bromley. | Kent. S.E.
Oct. 19.
My dear Sir
The “Mattee” is the species which you name. I am much obliged for the correction at p. 286 of the figure “713.” which is a misprint.2
I expect soon to receive the remaining clean sheets of vol 1, & when recd they shall be sent without delay.3
I shall have great pleasure in sending you a perfect copy of the book, & you have the best right of any one to claim a copy.4
In Vol. 2. p. 181 you will find some pages which you have already translated in the last edit. of the Origin, & which I have here re-inserted; but will you be so kind as to compare them carefully, as I have altered & inserted a few sentences in the hope of making the subject clearer.5 I do not know what you will think about Chap. 27;6 I fear it is very wild, but after mature reflection I believe that physiologists will some day be compelled to admit some such doctrine.
With cordial thanks for all the kind interest you take about my book I remain | my dear Sir | yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin
