Footnotes

The year is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter to John Murray, 20 September 1867.
The reference is to the fourth edition of Origin, which was published in November 1866 (Freeman 1977). The publisher’s ledger records a payment to CD of £250 on 19 September 1867 (see Peckham ed. 1959, p. 776).
Murray refers to Orchids.
Murray refers to the index for Variation. The book was indexed by William Sweetland Dallas (see letter from John Murray, 1 November [1867]).
This figure was carried over from the last statement Murray had sent for sales of Orchids (see Correspondence vol. 13, Supplement, letter from John Murray, [1 July – 23 August 1862]).
After receiving the statement for Orchids, CD reminded Murray to charge him for the cost of three electrotypes sent to the United States (see Correspondence vol. 10, letter to John Murray, 24 August [1862] and n. 4).
Trade purchasers received one free copy in every twenty-five, as was the general practice (Plant 1965, p. 405), and were charged 6s. or 6s. 5d. The retail price of Orchids was 9s. See Freeman 1977, p. 113.
CD’s annotation refers to his payment of £12 for presentation copies. See letter to John Murray, 20 September 1867 and n. 2.
