Footnotes

The date is established by the relationship between this letter and the letter from J. D. Hooker, 4 July 1867. The Saturday before 3 August 1867 (see n. 3, below) was 27 July.
Hooker had taken his wife, Frances Harriet Hooker, to Switzerland. They evidently returned a day earlier than planned; they had meant to return on Tuesday 23 July. See letter from J. D. Hooker, 4 July 1867.
In 1867, 4 August was a Sunday.

Summary

Back from Switzerland. Mrs Hooker much improved.
