Darwin Correspondence Project

From Erasmus Alvey Darwin   [1864?]1

Dear Charles

I dont suppose you ever use your power of signing Sunday tickets,2 & if so I shall be glad of some as I am persecuted by waiters whenever I go to Athenæum3

Footnotes

The date is based on the endorsement ‘64’ in an unknown hand.
Erasmus Alvey Darwin may be referring to tickets issued to fellows of the Zoological Society of London for admission of their friends to the Zoological Gardens on Saturdays and Sundays; these tickets were abolished in 1867 (see Scherren 1905, p. 145). CD became a fellow of the Zoological Society in 1839, Erasmus in 1855 (Freeman 1978, List of fellows of the Zoological Society).
Erasmus became a member of the Athenaeum Club in 1842, CD in 1838 (personal communication from librarian of the Athenaeum Club).
