From Samuel Wells   17 November 1858

Holme Lacy Gardens

Novr. 17th. 1858

Sir

I forward you a few Beans1—and this is their History— Some 8 years ago I recd. from the Revd. B. S. Stanhope a few very small Beans2 I believe they are known by the name of the White Tick—with instructions to sow them in the Garden— in the produce of the first year of course there was nothing visible to indicate a sport— the Beans were the same as those I planted—but the second years crop contained a great proportion of Beans such as I have sent— since seeing your article in the Chronicle I have made inquiry after the third generation and my answer was “They turned out all manner— we set it down at the time the Bees had nocklated them”3

they are indebited to age for their colour— I believe they still retain their vitality and I will sow a few myself

CD annotations

Bottom of last page: ‘a paper about crossing Kidney Beans in Gardeners Ch. Nov. 20. 1858.—’5 ink

Footnotes

The letter was a response to CD’s request for information about the crossing of beans by bees in his letter to Gardeners’ Chronicle, [before 13 November 1858].
Probably Berkeley Lionel Scudamore Stanhope, rector of Bosbury, Herefordshire (Clergy list 1855).
Wells’s informant presumably means ‘inoculated’.
CD’s annotation refers to another response to his inquiry (see n. 1, above). See letter to Gardeners’ Chronicle, [before 13 November 1858], n. 21.

Bibliography

Clergy list: The clergy list … containing an alphabetical list of the clergy. London: C. Cox [and others]. 1841–89.

Summary

Reports on difference between first and second plantings of beans.
