I have heard from Herries3 that he has received the Interim Certif: of the Balance with call notes attached. If you received the Certif: of the 20% paid on allotment thro’ your Bank it is probably all right & the Bank has got the Certif: & Call notes but it will be as well to make sure that all is right.

The date range is established by the entries for London and North Western Railway Company stock in CD’s Investment book (Down House MS; see n. 2, below). Erasmus Alvey Darwin died in 1881.
CD had stock in the London and North Western Railway Company; he sold his shares in 1852, but purchased more around 1870, which he held until his death (CD’s Investment book (Down House MS)).
Herries, Farquhar, Chapman & Co. were a banking firm at 16 St James’s Street, London (Post Office London directory 1878).
