Darwin Correspondence Project

To J. V. Carus   25 October 1876

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

Oct 25. 76

My dear Sir,

I have written to the printers for fresh sheets, or my last corrected proofs of the 3 missing sheets  I send by this post six new sheets.1 I enclose the photograph as requested. I hear from Herr Koch that he requires 2,000 copies of the heliotypes for my Expression book. Some of the figures are so bad that new negatives must be made; this will cause some delay & cost; will you communicate with Herr Koch to this effect.2 Also please to thank him for copies of the Coral Reefs & Climbing plants, (the appearance of which I like very much) & for some other books.—3

I have an extra number of letters to write so excuse brevity | Yours very sincerely | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

A set of proof-sheets of Cross and self fertilisation had been lost (see letter to J. V. Carus, 18 October [1876] and n. 2). The printers were William Clowes & Sons.
Eduard Koch was head of CD’s German publisher, E. Schweizerbart’sche Verlagsbuchhandlung; his letter to CD has not been found. A second German edition of Expression had been printed in 1874 (Carus trans. 1874), and Koch had complained of the poor quality of the heliotype illustrations supplied by John Murray (see Correspondence vol. 22, letter from J. V. Carus, 7 July 1874 and n. 3).
Carus had translated Coral reefs 2d ed. and Climbing plants 2d ed. into German (Carus trans. 1876a and 1876c).
