Darwin Correspondence Project

From Otto Zacharias   2 October 18761

Dessau

den 2. Octob. | 1876.

Hochgeehrter Herr!—

In Ihren freundlichen Zeilen vom 10. May d.

Ergebenheit | Ihr | Dr. Otto Zacharias

2. Octob. | 1876.

Highly honoured Sir!—

In your kind lines of 10 May this year you were good enough to promise to send me the sheets of your latest work (On cross and self fertilisation etc. etc.).2 In this letter I take the liberty of reminding you of this promise, for I would like to get a number of essays on this subject ready by the time your book comes out. At the time, regarding your promise you said that you won’t forget—all the same I permit myself to remind you in all politeness—for I don’t presume that with your great scientific concerns you’ll have the leisure to remember in particular a young German scholar.

I will take care to ensure that the most influential German journals will carry reviews of your work—immediately after it comes out.—

— —Also, here’s a piece of news that surely must be of interest to you! For February 12, 1877, a substantial portion of the followers of the theory of evolution (in Germany) are preparing a “Darwin-Album”, that is, an artistically designed album with the photographs of well-known authors who have published on Darwinism.3

You surely will enjoy this original ovation.

Earlier I sent you a printed notice about it, as well as one about Prof. Jäger’s latest book which is just out.4

Prof. Haeckel has just been to the coast of Scotland and is now on his way back.5

With the renewed request for the sheets or the work itself to be sent, I sign | With the greatest respect | & devotion | Yours | Dr. Otto Zacharias.
