Down, | Beckenham, Kent. | Railway Station | Orpington. S.E.R.

March 8th

My dear old William

I am delighted to hear about the house & I send you a present of 250£ to help you over the expence of moving.2

Your affectionate old Father | C. Darwin

P.S. This has nothing to do with the 1000£ if you ever buy a House.—

Footnotes

The year is established by the reference to William Erasmus Darwin’s moving house, and by an entry in CD’s Classed account books (see n. 2, below).
CD visited William in his new house from 7 to 20 October 1876 (see CD’s ‘Journal’ (Appendix II) and letter to J. D. Hooker, 17 October [1876]). An entry in CD’s Classed account books (Down House MS) dated 8 March 1876 records a payment to William of £250.

Summary

Sends some cash to help WED with moving expenses.
