Gardener and botanist. Became a student gardener at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in 1867; foreman of the herbaceous department, 1870; foreman of the propagation department, 1871. Curator of the Cambridge University Botanic Garden, 1879–1919. Associate of the Linnean Society, 1881. Honorary MA, University of Cambridge, 1906.
