Darwin Correspondence Project

From Tiberius Cornelis Winkler1   7 July 1861

Monsieur!

T. C. Winkler

Harlem 7 Juillet 1861

Translation

From Tiberius Cornelis Winkler1   7 July 1861

Sir!

My dissertation on the fossil fish of Oeningen, which received an award from the Dutch Society of Sciences in Harlem, has been published, and I hope the dispatch to you of a copy of this piece will convince you of the respect inspired in me by your scientific works.2 I have had the honour of doing the Dutch translation of one of your illustrious works, your “Origin of Species”,3 and I am taking advantage of Sir Charles Lyell’s kindness to offer you a copy of that translation as well.4 I take the liberty of asking you kindly to let me know if these two works have arrived in your hands.

Accept, Sir, the assurance of my very highest esteem | T. C. Winkler
