Darwin Correspondence Project

To H. B. Tristram   3 March [1874]

Down, | Beckenham, Kent.

March 3d

My dear Sir

I thank you sincerely for all the great trouble which you have taken for Mr. Swinhoe & self. I have got another certificate & will send my servant up to London tomorrow & do my best to get the six signatures. It must be delivered on Thursday at the Royal Socy.—1

Again apologising for all the trouble which I have caused, & thanking you, I remain, | Yours very faithfully | Ch. Darwin

Footnotes

The signed certificate proposing that Robert Swinhoe be elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London had been lost in the post (see letter to secretary, Royal Society of London, 2 March [1874]); evidently CD obtained six signatures on the new certificate as Swinhoe’s candidacy was announced at the meeting of 5 March 1874 (Proceedings of the Royal Society of London 22 (1873–4): 228). Swinhoe was not elected a fellow in 1874, but was successful when proposed again in 1876 (see Record of the Royal Society of London).

Summary

Thanks HBT for all the trouble he has taken for Robert Swinhoe and himself. Will try to get six signatures on a new certificate and deliver it to the Royal Society in time.
